MAPS (Music Analysis & Positioning Survey) QUANTITATIVE U.K.

What Is MAPS?

MAPS is a quantitative research survey, syndicated across the music industry. The main rationale for MAPS is that it profiles the exact size and demographic structure of a given recording artist's market and shows the record company how to reach that market, via an extremely comprehensive account of their lifestyle habits and media consumption.

MAPS also provides the opportunity to ask the UK music-buying population any ad hoc, music-related questions; to profile specific market sectors; to test album concept ideas and to assess the market for a specific musical genre - anything, in fact, which is related to music.

MAPS started in 1989 and ran as an annual paper survey until 2004. Following a major revision, MAPS was re-launched in 2006 as an online survey, conducted five times a year.

The MAPS Sample

MAPS is statistically representative of the UK adult population. Annually, the sample comprises 25,000 active album buyers between the ages of 15 to 65 years (5 x 5,000 music buyers in each survey).

Key Question Areas

The key questions addressed on a MAPS survey include the following: awareness, past purchase, liking, past liking and intended future purchase of given artists (the confidential property of the commissioning record company), music purchasing patterns, Internet usage, music lifestyle and attitudes, magazine & newspaper readership (by title), TV and radio consumption (by programme & station) etc. The media information allows for a high quality media campaign to be devised.

Reporting

Five times a year, within three weeks of the end of each fieldwork period, every artist is profiled independently in a stand-alone report. Also available are full market tables and summary reports.

Since the survey began in 1989, its popularity has grown across the music industry, with clients including EMI, Sony/BMG, Warners and Universal, as well as a few smaller companies. We also offer companies with an interest in specific music-related issues/markets, the opportunity to investigate particular markets. The syndicated structure of MAPS results in costs that are significantly below those of comparable 'in-house' surveys.
